Claude Duet Alternatives: 4 AI Agents You Can Use Today, No Waitlist

Claude Duet is waitlisted and US only. Four proactive agents you can run today, sorted by where they run: a vendor's cloud or hardware you control.

Title card on white. A pill reading Alternatives, the title Claude Duet alternatives, the line Proactive agents with no waitlist and a Checked 22 Oct 2026 line. Beside them a queue of numbered tickets under a Waitlist sign, and four lanes that light up one by one, each tagged Open now.

The best Claude Duet alternatives today are Claude Cowork if you want Anthropic’s cloud, and Munder Difflin, OpenClaw or Hermes Agent if you want agents on hardware you control today. None of them has a waitlist.

Munder Difflin is free and open source: a desktop app that runs a team of AI agents for all kinds of knowledge work, coding included, on your own computer. Claude Duet is Anthropic’s proactive agent app, opened on 21 Oct 2026 as a research preview. New to it? Start with What is Claude Duet?. Every fact below comes from vendor pages opened on 22 Oct 2026.

Why look for a Claude Duet alternative?

Because most people cannot get it yet. From Anthropic’s announcement and product page:

  • Waitlist. Access is a research preview by waitlist. Anthropic says it will email you “as soon as Claude Duet’s ready for you.”
  • Region and plan. It starts with Pro and Max subscribers in the US. Team and Enterprise plans “are not included yet.”
  • Shared limits. Its background checks count toward your plan’s usage limits, the same pool as the rest of Claude.
  • Built for business apps. Its examples are Gmail, QuickBooks, Gusto, Docusign, HubSpot and Shopify. Anthropic says it built “its core functionality around work”, and that Duet “can’t yet show you its browser.”

Duet has real strengths: a morning brief, checks every few hours, approval before it sends, pays, signs or deletes, and more than 6,000 connectors and plugins in the Claude Marketplace. If you can wait and live in the US, wait. Everyone else can start today with one of the four below.

Does it run in a vendor’s cloud or on your hardware?

This decides whether a closed laptop stops the work and who holds your files. Duet works in its own virtual machine, so your laptop can be off. One pick on this list works the same way; three run on hardware you control.

Animation. Five name tokens drop into two zones. Claude Duet and Claude Cowork settle in a cloud labelled A vendor's cloud. Munder Difflin, OpenClaw and Hermes Agent settle on a desk labelled Hardware you control. Flip the Laptop lid closed switch and the desk dims with the tag Paused until it wakes, while the cloud keeps pulsing with the tag Still working.
Where each agent runs, from vendor pages opened on 22 Oct 2026.

1. Claude Cowork. Cowork is Anthropic’s agent for longer work: you describe an outcome, step away and come back to finished documents, files or research. Its help page says it is on paid plans (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise), runs sessions remotely in the cloud, and that “scheduled tasks run in the cloud, with no device online.” The difference from Duet: you start the work. Best for: Duet’s cloud model without the waitlist.

2. Munder Difflin. Munder Difflin is what we make. Its README says it works “with the subscriptions you already pay for, on their hourly limits.” Agents act without a prompt through schedules, a Slack channel can feed work to Michael, the lead agent, and spend, scope changes and destructive steps come back to you for approval. Agents reach your other apps through MCP servers, skills and plugins you add. Today agents run while your computer runs; the Cloud Office, coming soon, keeps them working with it off. Best for: a proactive team for research, writing, analysis, ops and code. Claude Duet vs Munder Difflin compares the two in full.

3. OpenClaw. OpenClaw is an open source (MIT) assistant that “runs on your own computer and meets you in the channels you already use”: WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, iMessage and more than 20 others. Best for: a personal assistant in your chat apps.

4. Hermes Agent. Hermes Agent from Nous Research is open source (MIT) with a learning loop: it creates skills from experience and builds a model of you across sessions. Its own cron scheduler runs “daily reports, nightly backups, weekly audits” unattended, and it answers on Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal or email. Best for: memory that grows, on a small server you control.

Which of them acts before you ask?

Three of the four can. Duet’s whole idea is that it comes to you first: a morning brief, then checks every few hours. Claude Cowork, Munder Difflin and Hermes Agent get there with schedules you set; OpenClaw answers when you message it.

Animation. A 24 hour dial with a sweeping hand. Coloured markers pop as the hand passes them, one colour per tool: Claude Duet's morning brief and checks every few hours, Claude Cowork's scheduled tasks, Munder Difflin's schedules and Hermes Agent's cron scheduler. Tap a tool to highlight its markers.
How each agent acts without a prompt. The marker times are examples.
Agent, 22 Oct 2026 Runs on Acts without a prompt Who can get it
Claude Duet Anthropic’s virtual machine Morning brief, checks every few hours Pro and Max in the US, by waitlist
Claude Cowork Anthropic’s cloud Scheduled tasks Paid Claude plans
Munder Difflin Your computer (macOS, Windows, Linux) Schedules, Slack and webhooks Anyone, free
OpenClaw Your computer Answers when you message it in your chat apps Anyone, free
Hermes Agent Your computer or server Cron scheduler Anyone, free

Our view: a schedule you wrote is less clever than Duet’s judgment about what is urgent, but you know exactly when it fires and what it costs.

Which Claude Duet alternative should you pick?

Start from the work, not the feature list. If the work must go on with your laptop shut, pick Claude Cowork. If you want a team of agents with different roles, pick Munder Difflin. If you want an assistant inside WhatsApp or Telegram, pick OpenClaw, and if you want memory that learns, pick Hermes Agent.

Animation. A marble drops through three question gates on a white marble run: Must it work with your laptop shut?, Want a team of agents, not one? and Want it in WhatsApp or Telegram? Each Yes or No exit leads to a bin: Claude Cowork, Munder Difflin, OpenClaw or Hermes Agent. Steer the marble with the Yes and No buttons.
Three questions that pick an alternative.

FAQ

Is there a free alternative to Claude Duet?

Yes. Munder Difflin, OpenClaw and Hermes Agent are free and open source and run on hardware you control. You still need an AI model: a subscription you already pay for, an API key, or a local model. Claude Duet itself is included in Pro and Max during its research preview, by waitlist.

Can I use Claude Duet outside the US?

Not yet. Anthropic's announcement of 21 Oct 2026 says the preview starts with Pro and Max users in the US, and the product page says Team and Enterprise plans are not included yet. The open source picks on this page have no region limit.

Which Claude Duet alternative keeps working when my laptop is off?

Claude Cowork. Anthropic's help page says scheduled tasks run in the cloud with no device online. Munder Difflin, OpenClaw and Hermes Agent run on a machine you control today, so that machine has to stay on, though Hermes Agent can live on a small server. The Munder Difflin Cloud Office, coming soon, keeps its agents working with your computer off.

Which Claude Duet alternative gives me a team of agents?

Munder Difflin. It runs a team of AI agents for all kinds of knowledge work, coding included: research, writing, analysis, ops and code, each agent with its own role, on schedules and Slack. Duet is one agent in one thread.
