Claude Duet vs Munder Difflin: One Agent in the Cloud or a Team on Your Computer
Claude Duet is one proactive agent in Anthropic's cloud. Munder Difflin gives you a free team of AI agents for all kinds of work. How they differ, side by side.

Claude Duet is one proactive agent that works in Anthropic’s cloud on your business apps. Munder Difflin is free and open source: a desktop app that runs a team of AI agents for all kinds of knowledge work, coding included, on your own computer. Pick Duet for one assistant, Munder Difflin for a team.
Both were checked on 22 Oct 2026. Duet facts come from Anthropic’s announcement and product page. Munder Difflin facts come from its public README. Munder Difflin is what we make, and we say where Duet is the better pick.
What is the main difference?
One agent versus a team. Duet is a single agent: you talk to it “in one ongoing thread”, by typing or voice, and it carries over your memory, skills and connected apps from your Claude account. Munder Difflin runs several named agents with their own roles, such as research, writing, ops or code. Each runs on an engine you pick, such as Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, OpenCode or Qwen Code. They pass messages through a shared hive, which the README describes as “a local git repo of plain files”, and an orchestrator called Michael routes the work.

Where they run differs too. Duet “has a virtual machine with its own browser”, so it keeps working with your laptop and phone off. Munder Difflin runs on macOS, Windows or Linux, and today its agents work while that computer is awake. Its Cloud Office, coming soon, moves them to the cloud so work goes on with the computer off.
How do they keep you in control?
Both stop before risky steps, and they draw the line in different places. Duet reads, drafts and prepares on its own, but before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, “it shows you exactly what it’s about to do and waits for your approval.” Trading securities and moving money between accounts are off limits even with approval.
In Munder Difflin, the orchestrator settles routine requests itself and sends spend, destructive operations and scope changes “into an approvals queue you act on.” You set how far each agent may go on its own, and a circuit breaker “steers, constrains, then stops anything that loops or runs away.”

Duet’s safety work is deeper on sensitive data: Anthropic built a classifier and safety prompt designed to reject requests to share “the strictest tier of information, including credit card numbers and government identification.” Munder Difflin’s guard rails are about runaway agents and spend, which is where teams of agents tend to go wrong.
Which usage limits does each one use?
Both run on subscriptions you already pay for. During the preview, Duet is included in Pro and Max and “shares your plan’s usage limits with the rest of Claude”; its background checks count toward those limits, and larger tasks need more model turns. Munder Difflin works “with the subscriptions you already pay for, on their hourly limits”, across whichever CLIs you install, and adds per agent token budgets, bring your own keys, and local models through Ollama, LM Studio or vLLM.

If you run both on one Claude plan, they draw from the same allowance. Anthropic does not say how Duet’s checks weigh against heavy Claude Code use, so watch your usage page in the first week.
Should you choose Claude Duet or Munder Difflin?
Choose by the work you want off your plate. Our read of both, on 22 Oct 2026:

| Shape | One agent, one thread | A team of named agents |
| Runs on | Anthropic’s virtual machine | Your computer; Cloud Office coming soon |
| Works with | More than 6,000 connectors and plugins | MCP servers, skills and plugins; engines such as Claude Code, Codex and Gemini CLI |

| Access | Pro and Max in the US, by waitlist | Free download, macOS, Windows, Linux |
| Source | Closed | Open source (MIT) |
Be honest about the catch on our side. Today Munder Difflin needs a computer that stays awake, an engine such as Claude Code installed and signed in, and a little setup per agent. Duet needs none of that: Anthropic says setup “requires minimal work” because your memory, skills and connected apps carry over from your Claude account.
Duet is the better pick if your day is email, invoices, payroll and contracts, and you are in the US on Pro or Max. Munder Difflin is the better pick if you want a team that splits research, writing, analysis, ops and code, if you are outside the US, or if you want several engines at once. Build your own Claude Duet shows a morning brief agent, step by step, and Claude Duet alternatives lists more options. New to Munder Difflin? Start with your first hour.
FAQ
Is Munder Difflin made by Anthropic?
No. Munder Difflin is an independent open source project, and we make it. It runs Anthropic's Claude Code as one of its engines, next to Codex, Gemini CLI, OpenCode and others. Claude Duet is Anthropic's own app.
Can Munder Difflin work with my business apps like Claude Duet?
Yes, through what you connect. Its agents do research, writing, email drafts, analysis, ops and code, and reach other apps through MCP servers, skills and plugins you add, plus Slack and webhooks. Duet comes with more than 6,000 connectors in the Claude Marketplace, ready from your Claude account.
Does Munder Difflin work while my computer is off?
Today its agents run on your computer, and the app has a setting that keeps it awake while agents are live. The Munder Difflin Cloud Office, coming soon, runs agents in the cloud so work goes on with your computer off, and a dedicated mobile app is also coming soon. Claude Duet already runs in Anthropic's virtual machine.
Can I use both?
Yes. They do not overlap much. Duet can brief you on your inbox and invoices in the morning, while a Munder Difflin team runs your research, reports, ops and code on a schedule. Both can use the same Claude subscription, so watch your usage page.
