Is Claude Duet Good for Developers? What It Does With Code and What It Doesn't

Claude Duet can prototype and build web apps, but it is built for business apps, not your repo. What developers get from it, and where Claude Code fits better.

Title card on white. A pill reading Developers, the title Is Claude Duet good for developers?, the line What it does with code, and what it doesn't and a Checked 22 Oct 2026 line. A balance scale holds an inbox tray on one pan and a code block on the other and settles level.

Claude Duet is not built for developers first. Anthropic made it for professionals and small business owners, and its examples are business apps. It can prototype and build web apps, but for work inside your repository, Claude Code is the better tool.

This page compares Anthropic’s Claude Duet announcement of 21 Oct 2026 with its Claude Code page, both opened on 22 Oct 2026. For a team of agents that also acts on a schedule and can work on your code, Munder Difflin is free and open source: a desktop app that runs a team of AI agents for all kinds of knowledge work, coding included, on your own computer.

What can Claude Duet do with code?

Some prototyping, on Anthropic’s word. The announcement says you can hand it tasks “from simple administrative tasks of scheduling meetings to more complex ones, such as building dashboards with dozens of tools, creating financial or sales forecasts, prototyping, and building web apps.” Anthropic also says the team behind Duet uses it to build the product, including prototypes, and to “even ship code.”

Everything else in its pitch is business work: missed Gmail and Slack messages, unpaid invoices in QuickBooks or Stripe, payroll in Gusto, agreements in Docusign, follow ups from HubSpot, and Shopify stores. Claude Code’s page opens on a different job: “Hand Claude a bug fix, test, or multi-day migration.”

Animation. Two overlapping circles. Claude Duet: business apps holds Gmail, QuickBooks, Gusto, Docusign, HubSpot and Shopify. Claude Code: your repo holds Bug fix, Tests, Migration and Code review. The overlap, Prototypes and web apps, holds Prototype and Web app. Tap a chip to see its source.
Where Duet and Claude Code overlap, from Anthropic's pages opened on 22 Oct 2026.

Our view: the overlap is small. If you want a quick internal dashboard or a throwaway web app, Duet can do it from a message. If the change has to land in a codebase with tests and review, use a coding agent.

Where does Claude Duet run compared with Claude Code?

Duet runs in its own cloud machine; Claude Code runs where your code is. Anthropic says Duet “has a virtual machine with its own browser, so it doesn’t require your laptop or phone to be on.” It also says Duet “can’t yet show you its browser.” Claude Code lets you “steer and review from your terminal, IDE, Slack, or web” and is available for macOS, Linux and Windows.

Animation. On the left, Claude Duet's virtual machine holds its own browser under a cloud. On the right, panels labelled Terminal, IDE, Slack and Web show where Claude Code runs, and a dotted line joins the Terminal panel to a folder tree labelled Your repo.
Duet works in its own virtual machine; Claude Code works next to your repository.

That matters for a developer. Your repository, your test runner, your secrets in a local environment file and your Git history live on your machine or your CI. A coding agent that runs there can use them directly. Duet’s connectors reach business apps; Anthropic’s pages do not describe it opening a local repository.

What does Claude Duet ask before it acts?

Anything that sends, pays, signs or deletes. Duet “reads, drafts, and prepares work on its own”, then waits for your approval before those four kinds of step. Some actions, such as trading securities or moving money between accounts, are off limits even with approval.

Developers will recognise the machinery. Anthropic says Duet’s actions are approved by its “auto mode classifier”, the same safeguard that “protects Claude and Claude Code from taking steps you didn’t ask for”, and that its handling of credentials follows the design of Claude Managed Agents, “so it never directly sees your passwords or sign-in tokens.” Its defences against prompt injection come from Anthropic’s browser use research.

That is a sensible base for an agent that reads email. It is not the same as review on a pull request, which is where a coding agent’s mistakes get caught.

Does Claude Duet share limits with Claude Code?

Yes, during the preview. Duet “shares your plan’s usage limits with the rest of Claude”, and “its background checks count toward those limits.” Anthropic adds that it checks your accounts every few hours “because checking nonstop would use up your plan’s limits much faster.”

If Claude Code eats most of your Max plan every week, Duet’s checks come out of the same pool. Anthropic does not say how the two weigh against each other, so watch the usage page in your first week. Our Claude Code Max plan tips cover where the allowance goes.

How should a developer use Claude Duet?

As the morning assistant, not the engineer. Let Duet handle your inbox, calendar and invoices if you run a small business, keep Claude Code for the work at your keyboard, and put recurring code chores on a schedule that runs on your own machine.

Animation. A day timeline from 08:00 to 08:00. A yellow band marks Claude Duet's morning brief with checks every few hours, a blue band marks Claude Code from 10:00 to 18:00 with you at the keyboard, and a mint band marks Munder Difflin's scheduled agents from 22:00 to 06:00. Drag the time to lift each band.
One way to split a day between the three. The times are examples.

For the overnight part, build your own Claude Duet sets up a morning brief of pull requests, failing checks and new issues in Munder Difflin. Claude Duet vs Munder Difflin compares the two directly, and our office use cases show what a team of agents does in a day.

FAQ

Can Claude Duet write code?

Yes, in a limited sense. Anthropic's announcement lists prototyping and building web apps among the tasks you can hand it, and says the team behind Duet uses it to ship code. It is not presented as a tool for working inside your own repository; that is Claude Code's job.

Does Claude Duet replace Claude Code?

No. Anthropic positions them differently. Claude Code takes a bug fix, test or multi day migration and runs in your terminal, IDE, Slack or the web. Duet briefs you on your business apps and works in its own virtual machine with its own browser.

Does Claude Duet use the same limits as Claude Code?

It shares your plan's usage limits with the rest of Claude during the research preview, and its background checks count toward them. Anthropic does not say how that sits next to heavy Claude Code use, so check your usage page in the first week.

What should a developer use for a proactive agent on code?

A scheduled agent on your own repository. Munder Difflin runs a team of AI agents for all kinds of knowledge work, coding included, on engines such as Claude Code, Codex and Gemini CLI, and can fire them on a schedule, for example a morning brief of pull requests, failing checks and new issues.
