Cline Alternatives: 6 Picks and 2 Names to Skip (Oct 2026)
Six Cline alternatives checked on 19 Oct 2026: Kilo Code, Munder Difflin, OpenCode, Codex, Claude Code and Cursor, plus two you can skip, by licence and price.

The best Cline alternative is Kilo Code if you want the same open source agent in your editor, and Munder Difflin if you want several agents on one job. OpenCode, Codex, Claude Code and Cursor cover the terminal, ChatGPT plans, Anthropic plans and an editor with its own models. Skip Roo Code and Continue. Checked 19 Oct 2026.

This guide sits in our Comparisons hub, next to Kilo Code vs Cline and Cursor vs Cline.
Why look for a Cline alternative?
Cline is a good agent, so the reasons are about fit. It is Apache 2.0 on GitHub, and its pricing page says it is “free for individual developers”, with AI inference paid at cost or with your own key (19 Oct 2026). People look elsewhere when they want:
- Another licence or a stated model count. Kilo Code is MIT and lists 500+ models.
- More than one agent at a time. That is a different kind of tool.
- A terminal first agent. OpenCode and Codex start in the terminal.
- One plan that covers the model. Claude Code comes with Anthropic’s plans, and Cursor’s plans include its own models.
Six Cline alternatives, by job
1. Kilo Code. Kilo Code is “an AI coding agent that meets you everywhere you work”: VS Code, JetBrains and the CLI. Its README says you can use “500+ models, switch between them mid-task, and pay the model provider’s rate with zero markup”. MIT, 27,659 stars on 19 Oct 2026. Its pricing page lists Teams at $15 per user per month (19 Oct 2026). Best for: the closest swap. See Kilo Code vs Cline.
2. Munder Difflin. This is what we make, and it is free and open source: a desktop app that runs a team of coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex and Gemini CLI on your own computer. It is not an editor extension. The install guide takes you from download to a first agent. Best for: splitting one job across several agents.
3. OpenCode. OpenCode is “The open source AI coding agent”, MIT licensed, with 217,436 stars and release v1.19.3 (16 Oct 2026) on 19 Oct 2026. It runs in the terminal and as a desktop app in beta for macOS, Windows and Linux. Its plan agent “Denies file edits by default”. Best for: a terminal agent with an open licence. See what is OpenCode.
4. Codex. Codex CLI is “a coding agent from OpenAI that runs locally on your computer”, Apache 2.0. OpenAI’s Codex pricing page lists the CLI from ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month on 19 Oct 2026, or you can sign in with an API key. Best for: people who already pay for ChatGPT. See what is Codex.
5. Claude Code. Anthropic’s docs call it an “agentic coding tool that reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and integrates with your development tools”, in the terminal, IDE extensions, a desktop app and the web. Its GitHub repository lists no open source licence. Anthropic’s pricing page includes Claude Code in Pro, $20 if billed monthly (19 Oct 2026). Best for: people on an Anthropic plan. See Claude Code pricing.
6. Cursor. An editor with its own agent, CLI and cloud agents. Since 12 Oct 2026, per Cursor’s forum post, it is sold as part of The X Subscription. Cursor’s pricing page lists Plus at $8 a month and Premium at $30 (19 Oct 2026); per Cursor’s docs on 19 Oct 2026, Plus runs Cursor’s own models and Premium adds models from other labs at API list price, paid from prepaid credit. Best for: the editor and Cursor’s own models on one bill. See Cursor vs Cline.

FAQ
What is the best Cline alternative?
Kilo Code, if you want the same kind of tool: an open source agent in VS Code, JetBrains and the CLI. It is MIT licensed and lists 500+ models. If you want several agents on one job, Munder Difflin fits better. Checked 19 Oct 2026.
Is there a free Cline alternative?
Yes. Kilo Code, Munder Difflin and OpenCode are free and open source, and the Codex CLI is open source too. You still pay for the model: an API key, a plan you already pay for, or a free or local model where the tool supports one.
Is Roo Code still a Cline alternative?
Not for new projects. GitHub shows the Roo Code repository as archived, and its README says the extension "was shut down on May 15th", so it gets no new releases. Our what is Roo Code page explains what that means for current users.
Is Continue still maintained?
Not actively. Its README says the repository "is no longer actively maintained and is read-only for all users", after a final 2.0.0 release of the VS Code extension, CLI and JetBrains plugin.
Is there a Cline alternative that is not open source?
Yes. Claude Code comes with Anthropic's Pro plan, $20 if billed monthly, and Cursor, sold as part of The X Subscription, has paid plans from $8 a month. Both checked on 19 Oct 2026.
